We are pleased to announce the second annual conference of the research program on "Jewish Culture in the Ancient World," which will take place on Sunday, June 3, 2012,
at Beit Daniel in Zichron Ya'akov. The theme of this year's conference is "The Beit Midrash: Institutions of Higher Learning Among the Jews in Antiquity." In recent years, scholars have devoted increasing attention to the emergence of Jewish institutions of higher education in antiquity. How did these Jewish institutions evolve over time, from the Second Temple period to that of the Talmudic sages? What distinguishes earlier institutions from later ones? How does the Babylonian beit midrash differ from its Palestinian counterpart? What is the relationship between Jewish academies and those of surrounding cultures? These and other questions will feature in our upcoming conference.

Our speakers include:

Dr. Sylvie Honigman
Prof. Cana Werman
Dr. Paul Mandel
Mr. Moshe Maya
Prof. Steve Fine
Dr. Shana Schick
Prof. Isaiah Gafni
